Free depression self-check

Am I depressed? Take a 2-minute depression test

This self-check uses the PHQ-9, the same nine-question screening tool doctors and therapists use. It can't diagnose depression, but it can help you decide whether to talk with a professional. Your answers stay on your device. Nothing is sent to us.

Understanding depression

Signs of depression to watch for

Everyone has hard days. Depression is different: low mood or loss of interest that lasts most of the day, nearly every day, for two weeks or longer, and gets in the way of work, school, or relationships.

Common signs include sadness or emptiness, losing interest in things you used to enjoy, changes in sleep or appetite, low energy, trouble concentrating, feeling worthless or guilty, moving or talking more slowly, or restlessness. Some people notice irritability, aches and pains, or pulling away from friends and family more than sadness.

Depression is common and treatable. Most people improve with the right combination of therapy, medication, and support.

Questions

Depression test FAQ

Is an online depression test accurate?

The PHQ-9 is a well-studied screening tool, and doctors use it to measure how severe symptoms are. A screening score isn't a diagnosis, though. Only a clinician who talks with you can diagnose depression and rule out other causes, such as thyroid problems, medication side effects, or other conditions.

What does my PHQ-9 score mean?

Scores of 0–4 suggest minimal symptoms, 5–9 mild, 10–14 moderate, 15–19 moderately severe, and 20–27 severe. Clinicians often recommend an evaluation at a score of 10 or higher, but any score is worth discussing if your symptoms are bothering you.

Do I need a referral to be seen?

No. You can call us directly at 618-398-4226. Your primary care provider or therapist can also fax a referral to 618-398-1759.

Can teenagers take this test?

This version is designed for adults. If you're worried about a child or teen, call us. We care for children and adolescents and can talk through next steps with you.
